Stephen Lord

Stephen Lord is a Senior Research Scientist with CICS, working on the Next-Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS) project.  He is retired from the National Weather Service, where he was the Senior Scientist for Weather and Climate Modeling in the NWS Office of Science and Technology (2013-2014).  After moving to OST in 2010, he assisted in writing the NWS Science and Technology Roadmap for 2011-2020 and the Joint Polar Satellite System Gap Mitigation science development plan (2012). He managed the Gap Mitigation portion of the Sandy Supplement (2013-2014), initiated the Rapidly Updating Analysis program, and led the NOAA effort for the COASTAL Act assessment.  From 2000-2010, he was Director of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, Environmental Modeling Center (NCEP/EMC).  There, he managed development of the Nation’s operational numerical forecast systems for global and regional weather, seasonal climate and real-time ocean prediction as well as projects underpinning national research capabilities such as the Regional Reanalysis and the global Climate Forecast System Reanalysis.  He has provided input to National Academy of Sciences studies, in particular, “From Research to Operations in Weather Satellites and Numerical Weather Prediction - Crossing the Valley of Death.”  During his Federal Service career, Dr. Lord received a Department Of Commerce Gold medal, a NOAA Bronze medal and a Presidential Rank Award.  Dr. Lord received his Ph. D. in Atmospheric Sciences from UCLA in 1978, with a Dissertation entitled “Development and Observational Verification of a Cumulus Cloud Parameterization.”
